Yesterday was a LONG day. I didn't have time to eat my snacks, so I ate some of them with my lunch, which was leftover sweet potato & steak nachos. I need to stop eating those Paleo protein bars...they're just SO yummy. Especially the one yesterday. It was Devil's Food Cake. Mmmm. I am finally caught up on ALL grading in the college courses I teach. When you're a little behind in one class, it's no biggie because it doesn't take that long to get caught up. But when you're a little behind in THREE classes, it takes awhile to get grades submitted. Thankfully my college students know this semester was a crazy one for me & they have been SO flexible & understanding. All I have left to grade now are their finals, which won't even be submitted until the end of next week. It feels SO good to be caught up!
In January, I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to make it through this semester. I was teaching full-time, taking the last class in my doc program, working on comps, co-authoring an article with a research professor at Mizzou, & teaching 3 college courses. I don't like telling people no, so I tend to take on too much. I'm working on it. But, I think I'm going to survive! It was touch & go there for awhile, not going to lie. But the end is in sight!!
The long day turned into a long night. Jake got called into work, again, poor guy, & I decided I needed wine. Sometimes your glass of wine needs to be bigger than your dinner. I had some spaghetti squash casserole, drank my wine, & worked on some homework.
I got lots of cuddles from the little one. I didn't even have food at this point! Sometimes she really does love me. ; )
I was about to go to bed (at 8 pm...) when I remembered that I wanted to marinate our dinner for Friday. We have both been craving wings, so that's what we are going to have! This is our favorite brand. Springer Farms. If you haven't had their meat, check it out. Price Cutter sells it. It's SO juicy. I got wings & drumsticks.
We got some amazing honey from the farmer's market the last time we were there, it's a little spicy, so I added it to the marinade for our wings. We LOVE garlic...obviously.
All ready to go! This smelled amazing, so I hope it tastes good! We will have wings, sweet potato fries, & cauliflower rice. After I got this prepped, it was bed time!
It was pouring when my alarm went off to go run, so I checked the weather & will try to get a short run in this afternoon. It's supposed to stop raining for a little bit! Fingers crossed. I forgot to take a picture of breakfast, but it was the same scramble I have had all week. My hair has been in a constant state of frizz for the past 3 weeks. Thanks a lot, rain! Eye-roll. Today is one of those days when I wish I could wear hats to school...
REALLY missing sunny, warm weather! I want to take the girls on another trail run soon. They just LOVE it.
I like this image & saying, so I thought I'd share.
I also miss climbing...I'm not great, but I think it's fun!
Again, these faces depict our feelings about the weather. Rain, rain go away!
This is in our guest bathroom. I need to find some white/cream stuff to go on that bottom shelf...I was hoping those black items would work, but I think we need something to stand out more.
We have some stuff that we want to change around the house, so I think we are planning on going to Lowe's tonight after we eat. We definitely want to paint our front door, which I'm excited about! We have pretty similar tastes, so that helps when making decorating decisions. : ) We also have NOTHING going on this weekend, which I am pumped about. It seems like we rarely have free weekends. Knowing us, we will end up finding things to do, but I'm going to enjoy not having set plans!
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
Jake got called into work Wednesday morning at 2:30 am. YUCK. He then worked in the cold rain, climbing poles, for hours. Poor guy. I'm so proud of him. He never complains. Ever. I would probably sit in the work truck & refuse to get out...I hate being cold & wet. I'm kind of a baby...but he isn't & he's amazing. While I hated that he had to go to work so early, I loved getting to grab coffee with him during my lunch break! We met at Coffee Ethic to grab coffees & chat.
So sick of the rain, but still smiling!!
I didn't run yesterday - I've been having some knee/stuff (story of my life, lately), so I decided I needed some hot yoga in my life. I changed & got ready to go, but all I really wanted to do was take a nap. I think the weather yesterday was making me SO tired. Well, I got to the yoga studio about 10 minutes before class started & made the mistake of laying down on my mat & closing my eyes. The next thing I know, class is starting. I had totally fallen asleep. Out cold. Whoops! I was kind of out of it for about the first 15 minutes of class because I think I was still trying to wake up. The room was just so warm & toasty - it put me right to sleep! That was definitely a first...
During yoga, Jake got called back into work, poor guy. I went home to heat up dinner & relax. All I had to do was throw the spaghetti squash casserole into the oven at 350 for 30 minutes. Super simple!
I got this text from Jake as I was getting dinner ready. He's so sweet & always makes sure to tell me he appreciates me. <3
I ate dinner on the couch, while watching a little Netflix. The weather was SO gross. I was glad to be inside & cozy. Definitely feeling sympathetic for Jake working his tail off in the cold drizzle.
Lu always sits in Jake's recliner when he's gone. Um, Mom. I'll have some of your dinner!
I was craving sweets ALL day yesterday. ALL. DAY. To try & not cave, I had some tea with honey in it....read below to see if that worked...eye-roll.
Totally didn't kick my craving....I also decided a little glass of whiskey was in order. Wednesdays are hard! I had two small pieces of the candy bar, so I at least controlled myself & didn't devour the entire thing. Jake...don't say a word! ; ) Also, my throat was a little sore, so I needed the whiskey to soothe it! ; )
Then it was early to bed with LOTS of furbaby cuddles.
Up early to run. These are my favorite socks...I did laundry last night just so I could wear them again this week. I need a few more pairs.
It was perfect running weather this morning. I love when it's a little chilly when I start my run. My hip was hurting about mile 5, hence the face, but I stretched it out once I got home. I plan on stretching & rolling tonight, too. I think my tight hips are what's affecting my knees. I'd love any input from anyone on loosening up hips!
I really struggled on a few small hills this morning. Other than that & my hip, the run felt good!
All the powdery goodness to recover!! Mmmmm. Super greens, a little PB protein (not Paleo), & some vegan chocolate protein powder. Oh, & a little MCT Oil.
I was running a little late this morning, so I cooked our breakfast, but had to take mine with me to eat at school. 3-egg scramble with onion, mushrooms, spinach, peppers, & Sriracha. My favorite breakfast!
I sent this to Jake yesterday. That's a whole lot of like! <3
As I was eating breakfast at school this morning, a student I had last year came in & gave this note to me. It totally made my day! While I am really excited about next year, I know I am going to miss working with middle schoolers every day. They can be turds, but it's definitely my favorite age group. They're just so goofy & sassy.
Since we workout in the mornings, which isn't always easy...this is the mantra I repeat to myself when I don't want to get up to my 4 am alarm. It's so true.
Any advice for tight hips? Other than stretching, yoga, & rolling?
It's Friday eve, y'all! <3
Yesterday was a super busy day, but I got SO much accomplished. My To-Do list is almost totally crossed off, which is my favorite. I love To-Do lists, which I think I have mentioned before. I snacked on some carrots & almond butter while I was working. I finally got around to using our new glass containers. They worked perfectly!
Then before I knew it, it was lunch time. I had a spinach salad with chicken, tomatoes, and onion. I used avocado oil, mustard, & Sriracha as the dressing. Those ingredients make up one of my favorite dressings. I also had a Halo & a hard-boiled egg.
We got these Paleo protein bars awhile ago. It has taken us a long time to get through them. They're pretty good, just a little different. This one was Espresso flavored. <3
Then it was home to do a little bit of abs, weights, stretching, and more rolling. All while watching Parks & Rec, of course.
The girls would NOT leave me alone.
The little one kept crawling onto my face. I finally caved & gave her some love. Aspen got sick of me pushing them away, so she sulked in the chair.
Jake called & said he was finished riding, so I got up to start on dinner. I look over & Lu has taken over my workout area. She's pretty into lifting weights. I was dying laughing.
We were just having leftover nachos from Monday, so prepping dinner didn't take long at all. I just needed to throw together a salad. I also picked up this salsa. It's suuuuper yummy!
Mmmmm. We ate the nachos cold & they were really good that way! I added black beans to Jake's. We sat outside & ate, which was relaxing. I'm so ready for this nice weather to stay around! (Especially as we go into some serious rain/storms this week...)
Jake needed to go to the gas station, so we loaded the girls into the truck & took a little family car ride. They loved it. Obviously. They rode like this the entire way there & the entire way home. They were pretty jazzed about being in the car.
I attempted a family photo, but Lu & Aspen were too busy being weird.
This is how I feel on this rainy Wednesday. Bring me ALL the coffee. All of it.
I didn't get up to run this morning, I didn't sleep all that great, & since I have class tonight (eye roll), I probably won't get a run in. But, Jake got called into work at 2:30 am, so I'm not going to complain! To make myself feel better, I made this super delicious smoothie. It helped! This has half a frozen banana, frozen blueberries & raspberries, unsweetened coconut milk, chia seeds, flax seeds, protein powder, super greens powder, MCT oil, & a bunch of spinach. It's SUPER filling & really tasty.
It's Teacher Appreciation Week! This is what we got this morning - how cute?! 18.5 days left!!!! YAY!
I don't think I have talked about my adoption on the blog before, but I think most people know. And if you didn't, now you do! ;) The other night I was just thinking about how blessed I am to have the best parents in the entire world, but to also have Dawn, my birth-mom, in my life. Dawn is on the left of this picture & my Mom is on the right. Without Dawn, I would not be here & I would not have gotten to grow up with my loving parents. I didn't meet Dawn until I was 25, so about 3 years ago. It was such an amazing experience & we clicked immediately. I called my Mom right after I left Dawn & she, of course, wanted to meet Dawn ASAP. So, I had them both over a few days later to drink wine & hang out. It was so incredible seeing them meet. I am so grateful that we all get along & love each other! I will share more about my adoption later!
Try & stay dry today, friends! <3
This was lunch yesterday! I was in a rush, so I just threw some stuff together. Sometimes these are my favorite lunches. Turkey, ham, hardboiled egg, a Halo, & a Sriracha/mustard mixture. Mm.
I got home & did some major meal prep. I feel like chopping veggies takes the longest, so I wanted to get everything chopped for the week. We have mushrooms & onions for our breakfast scrambles (we add spinach, too), peppers for snacks, beets & brussels for Jake's lunches, & I got our Wednesday & Thursday dinner prepped - it just needs to be thrown in the oven! I love being able to get all of this stuff finished ahead of time. I think that's something I'm looking forward to the most for next year.
The recipe for the spaghetti squash casserole (picture on the right) is under Eats! It's amazing.
I did a little cleaning, then decided to have a snack & read outside. Princess Aspen kept me company. <3
We had sweet potato & steak nachos for dinner! This is another recipe under Eats - super delicious.
Mmmmm. SO yummy. I like my sweet potato chips kind of burnt...
Our babies were pouting about not being able to sit with us in the kitchen. Spoiled rotten.
Please excuse our EXTREMELY MESSY garage - we are in the process of going through stuff. BUT, look what we got!!! A tandem bike! We picked it up last night & have been brainstorming about all the awesome things we are going to do to it. I think it needs sparkly ribbons! ; ) We rode it around a little last night, but not for very long. For those of you that know my latest struggles...I didn't fall off! Ha! It's a little scary not being able to see 100%, but it was fun!.
Ended the night by sipping on some dandelion tea with honey, watching New Girl. Yes, please!
Had a SUPER terrible run Monday afternoon, like, bad bad BAD. So, I woke up & tried to think positively. I got 5 miles in - my cool down was separate, & I felt really good! My knees have been giving me some fits, but I spent awhile rolling after we ran, so I'm hoping that helps.
Foam rolling & a super yummy recovery shake with this goodness. Love love love.
Breakfast this morning! 3-egg scramble with onion, spinach, mushrooms, and some yellow pepper. Jake whipped this up for us & it was INCREDIBLE.
Currently OBSESSED with this song. So good!
If you are looking for comfy pants/leggings, check these out! They'll change your life. Seriously. There is a link to the site in the picture on the right, too. They come in ALL different colors. I just ordered more...they have a cute zipper along the outside, too. I just love them!
Cheers to Tuesday, friends! Get out & enjoy the beautiful sunshine!
I snagged a smoothie for lunch on Friday from Tropical Smoothie. It was delicious. I think it was called the Avocolada. It was a little sweet, but I loved it.
Jake got off work early Friday because he got called in suuuuper early that morning, so we ran together when I got home from school. Well, we attempted to run. It was not our best. Our legs were dead & we both just felt blah. We managed to get 6 in, & we definitely turned the closed trail into an obstacle course. There was water everywhere, so we did some puddle jumping & tried to splash each other. I lost. Eye-roll. Whatever. After our run, we got ready to meet my parents & sister at Grad School for dinner. We shared a salad, wings, and tacos. The wings were incredible. Definitely a Top 5 for me! Mmmmmm.
We were so excited to see The Temptations & The Beach Boys perform!! I had seen The Beach Boys before, but never The Temptations.
The Temptations were AMAZING.
And The Beach Boys were incredible, too! As always.
We were both struggling to stay awake...9 pm is our normal bedtime! We were getting up early to do long runs: 10 for me & 20 for Jake.
We woke up early Saturday & got ready to go to Wilson's Creek to run. It was cold & rainy. YUCK. My Timehop reminded me that this was my view one year ago...sunny, warm Cancun for a girlfriend's bachelorette party. Em, take us back!
I got 2 laps in at Wilson's Creek, which was 10 & the boys went on to do DOUBLE that. I was so impressed because my legs were DEAD.
Really. My legs hurt. But I LOVE Wilson's Creek & already want to go back & run there.
I came home to shower, then Jake called & said they were done. We met at Early Bird & ate breakfast with Katie. This is the deliciousness I had. I could only eat half at breakfast, but I finished it off a couple hours later. Then it was home to nap & lounge in bed. We watched a little Netflix & cuddled the girls. We never get to do that, so it was SO nice. Then we met our friends Nick & Cassie at Black Sheep for dinner. I totally failed & didn't get a single picture - we were having too much fun! Jake and I shared the Salt & Vinegar fries (which are my favorite), the fried pickles (which are his favorite), & a lettuce wrapped burger. I don't normally eat fried food because it gives me terrible heartburn, but everything sounded so good, I gave in. Nothing bothered me too much! Then we all stopped by Cherry Picker on our way home to grab a drink with another couple, Ryan & Sam, before we went home to pass out. We were both worn out!
On Sunday, we grabbed coffees from The Press. Their coffee is AMAZING. We sat outside drinking them, before grabbing breakfast at The Aviary. We were LOVING the sunshine & rain-free weather.
I got my favorite, the Humble Brag & Jake got a crepe with steak, carmelized onion, & blue cheese. They both were incredible. Jake also had a side of the frites, but they were being cooked when I took this picture & we didn't have the patience to wait! ; )
Then it was home to clean (me) & go for a ride (Jake). My parents gave us this door mat for Easter & we finally got around to putting it out front. We love it!! Thanks, Mom & Dad!
Jake got home early from his ride, his legs were just shot, so he didn't push it. I'm proud of him for listening to his body! He mowed while I worked on meal prep. We decided it was WAY too nice outside to be inside, so we rode our bikes to see Ryan & Sam's new house - which is perfect & adorable!!!! Then all four of us headed to Mother's to sit outside, chat, & enjoy some beer. It was a perfect day!
Jake & I rode bikes to Ebbett's for dinner, where Cassie & Nick met us. We loved getting to see everyone TWICE in one weekend! <3 We shared the Gibby. Mmm. After dinner, we rode home. I think we ended up with about 18-20 miles for the day!
Breakfast this morning was a 3-egg scramble with mushroom, onion, & spinach. Also, some pineapple! Mmm. I didn't run this morning, so I'm planning to do a short run later this afternoon.
Our menu for the week - 100% Paleo, which I'm SO ready for, especially after our weekend of fun!
Happy 24th Anniversary to Jake's parents!! <3
I hope everyone's Monday is wonderful!
The pictures from my half last weekend were released yesterday. I'm still on such a high from that run! I learned a lot from that race & I'm excited to sign up for my next. I can definitely push my body further than I thought & hard work 100% pays off. While I still have areas I want/need to work on & improve, I crossed the finish line last weekend knowing I had really pushed myself, which hasn't always been the case in the past. I didn't like being uncomfortable, so I would stick with paces that were comfortable & didn't hurt. If I wasn't excited to see improvements & results, that would be just fine. BUT I love looking back on races & seeing improvements. Each time I see these improvements, I'm pumped & ready to push even harder the next time. Jake is a huge support system for this & he pushes me even when I don't want to work any harder. I only roll my eyes at him on 32% of our runs. Multiple times. <3
Ashleigh wasn't feeling well yesterday, so we moved our double date to another night. I hope she is feeling MUCH better. She gave me this shirt in the Easter basket she brought over (yes, she's awesome), so I decided I should break it out last night in her honor. She & her amazingly talented sisters created these shirts & I just LOVE them. Ash actually wrote out the phrase, "My mascara runs faster than you", with actual mascara! I'm not very crafty, so I am always SO impressed by people who are. Thanks for my shirt, lady! I LOVE it!
Jake & I decided to still eat out since we didn't have food prepped & were feeling a little lazy. We couldn't decided between pizza, wings, burgers, or sushi. Pizza eventually won because we wanted to go The Pitch again, which is a new restaurant on Sunshine where Panera used to be. If you haven't been there yet, I highly recommend it! They use local produce & and the pizza crust is made using a flour that is imported from France. The crust is to die for. Seriously. Our favorite place to sit when we eat out is at the bar, so that's what we did last night! Cheers!
We started out by sharing this arugula & pine nut salad. That's an avocado ranch dressing. It is delicious!
We both are very passionate about good wings. The Pitch has an awesome happy hour, which includes half off apps, so we decided to try these bad boys. HOLY YUM. We got the raspberry chipotle & it did not disappoint. Brian, the owner, said they smoke these wings for 6 hours, then put them into the pizza oven to make them fall off the bone. That's EXACTLY what they did. We were both a mess by the time we finished eating these. Oh, and The Pitch has the BEST ranch. I hogged it all...sorry, Jake!
I was too busy enjoying my pizza to take a picture of the whole thing! We got the Spicy Creole, which has a spicy creole sauce, house-made sausage, peppers, & cheese. Also, look at that crust. It's my favorite.
When we got home, I caught this guy trying to be sneaky about his sweet tooth.
Then I remembered that I had gotten a variety of chocolate bars from Mama Jean's, so we shared this one. It was super yummy! We are going back to more strict Paleo on Monday, so we have to eat up the sugary stuff ASAP. I don't mind at all!!
These two goobs sleep 24/7.
Jake got called into work around 4 am, I think, & I heard it raining & I guess turned my alarm off? Who knows. Sooo I woke up late & had 20 minutes to get ready, cook breakfast, deal with the girls, pack running stuff, & get to work! I managed to do all of that AND make coffee - which I wouldn't be able to function without. I made an egg scramble with 3 eggs, spinach, onion, turkey, & ham. I topped it with salsa after the picture & totally ate it in the car. I didn't pack a lunch because I was craving a smoothie, so I will grab one during my lunch time.
I also mixed these two goodies together to have something to sip on after I ate my egg scramble.
It doesn't look all that appetizing, but it tastes AMAZING. Chocolate & PB? Yes, please!
If Jake gets off work early, since he went in so early, we will run together when I get home from school. If he doesn't, I will run on my own. Then we are meeting my parents for dinner before the BEACH BOYS CONCERT tonight! Yay! I can't wait. I have seen them once before & had a blast singing along to old tunes. My Dad used to sing their songs to me when I was little as he put me to bed, so I have so many fond memories of them.
We have a busy weekend, if the weather cooperates. We both want to get a long run in Saturday morning, then maybe stop by Rock'n Ribs for a little bit that afternoon. On Sunday, Jake has a mountain bike race called OMBA Caramba - come to Sac River & check it out if you're free Sunday! We will be out there all day enjoying good company.
I hope everyone has a relaxing, enjoyable weekend!
My bestie, Katie, sent this to me yesterday. She just gets me. I also KNOW I have a problem with rolling my eyes...I'm working on it! Kind of. (Eye- roll). I think 38% of our communication is via memes...I don't hate it! <3
This is SO true, which is why I had THREE packages on the porch yesterday. Whoops!
Jake & I have gone through a ton of Ziplocs lately & I wanted to stop. So, I got us some glass baby food jars. How cute are these?? They're Jervis & George, & I can't wait to try them out.
We love trying different protein powders, so this one is up next! Has anyone tried this? I'm looking forward to my first shake.
I desperately needed new shampoo & conditioner. Accidentally got the amplify, buuuut we will see! I already have a borderline fro 98% of the time. These smell SO good.
I had to Skype into class last night, & Lu would not stop jumping onto my lap. I finally let her stay for a little bit, but she just wanted to sleep. I got this picture of her yawning, haha!
I finally kicked her off my lap & she pouted for awhile. Poor baby. So neglected.
Sorry for the grammatical errors in this, but I had to share. This is my life, which is why we didn't go out for Mexican this week. Chips & salsa are a major weakness for me...
Leftover taco salad & pineapple guac for dinner! We both loved the ground lamb on these. Super good!
After dinner, we headed over to see our good friends, Scottie & Brandi's new place. Jake was being a weirdo with his hat, so I thought I needed to document it. Never a dull moment with this one! <3
We have missed this fella! I think he was worn out from begging for pizza. ; )
This happened on the way home. We had both been craving ice cream for awhile, so we caved & shared a small. It was pretty yummy!
Then it was into bed to give my girls some cuddles before I passed out. I love Aspen's face in the picture on the right. She was attempting to escape, I think. I just love these two!
Up at 4 to run! My IT band was still a little tender, but nowhere near as sore as it was yesterday, so I thought I'd test it out. I was prepared to run half a mile & turn around to go back home if it started bothering me. I sat on the floor to put socks on & Lu decided she needed cuddles. I drank some BCAAs & a little bit of coffee to help motivate me!
This run wasn't great, but we did it. We both felt worn out & heavy. We also had trouble breathing. It was pretty humid, so I'm hoping that's part of it. My knee started to hurt at mile 2, but it wasn't a super uncomfortable pain, so I told Jake I would go another little bit & then see. He was really good about checking in with me every so often. The knee pain eventually went away!! About mile 6, I FINALLY started to loosen up a little. So, we got 8 in this morning!
Home to shower super fast (we were running behind) & make breakfast. We had avocado toast, half a banana, & eggs over easy - 2 for me & 3 for Jake. This breakfast was a favorite! So yummy & quick to make.
Mmmm. Yes. I could eat this again right now!
Aspen always gets sad when we are getting ready to leave. She looked at me like this as I was walking toward the door, so I had to stop & give her some kisses. Look at that sweet face!! Don't let it fool you, though...she bit me a little right after this picture lol.
I told Jake I was bummed I didn't a picture after our run. I heard him shouting, "I got a picture!!" He then sends me this. Love it! He's the best.
We have double date night with Nick & Ash tonight at Galloway. We can't wait! We love getting to spend time with them.
Happy Friday Eve, everyone! This weather makes me want to go home, put sweats on, & lay on the couch. In 22.5 days, I can do just that! <3
I have THREE more class meetings for the class I am taking this semester, then I am FINISHED FOREVER. I am so ready. I've been having SERIOUS trouble getting motivated to do my homework...I finally knocked out some of the reading yesterday during my plan time. If skimming is wrong, I don't want to be right!
Chowed down on this yesterday for lunch - Stacey's wrap with turkey, ham, spinach, onion, & Sriracha, protein chips, & sweet potatoes. I was stuffed. Oh, & I had a Justin's PB cup as a treat! Thanks, Ash! <3
I was super worn out yesterday, so I needed to stay busy or I was going to nap. I decided to finish our meal prep for the week, then start on dinner. We love Springer Mountain Farms chicken. It's delicious. I baked these chicken breasts with a cajun seasoning.
Then I divvied everything up - the chicken, sweet potatoes, & broccoli - & topped it all with Sriracha. We are good to go for the rest of the week! Jake didn't need lunch for today, so no prepping for him!
When that was finished, I started on dinner. We had taco salads, but I had picked up some ground lamb, so we decided to use that as our protein. Mmm. It was so good! I browned it all & added the Taco Seasoning from Primal Palate. It's seriously delicious - and it's Paleo, so it doesn't make you feel bloated, like a lot of taco seasonings do to me. Check it out!
I also thought we needed margaritas, but again, the sugar that is added in most mixed drinks really kills my stomach, so I experimented with a healthier version. We used this Kombucha, water, & fresh lime juice. They were super refreshing & light! We both loved them.
Here is our spread! Chopped spinach, jalapeno black beans, ground lamp, chopped veggies, and pineapple guacamole. The beans and the goat cheese on top of the guac aren't Paleo, but everything else is! We call ourselves 85%-ers. ; )
My plate! This meal was super yummy & was pretty simple to throw together. Guac with pineapple in it is probably one of my favorite things - I think I could live off it. <3
And the best news?! Dinner is ready for tonight!
Jake had another meeting last night, so I cleaned up the kitchen, then sat down to relax & fold laundry. The socks in the picture on the left are my all-time favorite. They're called Feetures! and they fit like a dream. On some of the socks, they mark left & right, which really comes in handy when you struggle with that. ; ) As I was folding laundry, I came across these socks of Jake's & had a pretty good laugh. That guy & his tall socks...gotta love it!
I had planned on running 8 this morning, but woke up with quite a bit of IT pain (UUUUGH) so, I decided not to run today. I may try to get a quick run in before my class starts, it'll just depend how my knee feels. Jake got called into work super late last night & didn't get home until pretty early this morning. Because of that, he doesn't have to be at work until 11, so he was sleeping in a little. I made an egg scramble with spinach, onion, turkey, & ham for breakfast, & had Ezekiel toast with half a banana & some honey on it. YUM.
My IT band was really bothering me as I started walking around, so I iced it as I ate & then continued icing as I drove to school. I think that helped a little, it feels better! I get so frustrated when pains like this happen, but I know I would much rather take one or two days off than be out of commission for weeks or months. So, as of right now, I'm resting today.
The temperature in my classroom fluctuates ALL day - we are freezing one class period & burning up the next. I broke out a dress & my Chuck's for today...hopefully that helps me stay comfortable!
We are halfway through the work week! Aaaaand 23.5 days left of school. Wahoooo! I hope your Wednesday is wonderful!
We survived Monday!! I had this deliciousness for lunch yesterday. I was stuffed after eating the chicken, avocado, & sweet potatoes, so I didn't eat the rest of my food (carrots, yogurt, & apple). That resulted in the purchase of treats later on...whoops.
These are the glorious treats that made me cave. I was grabbing dinner from Mama Jean's - we forgot about a meeting last night, so we changed up our dinner plans, & these bad boys were staring at me. Jake and I shared the big cookie & each had a no bake. No bakes are literally my all-time favorite, & if you haven't had them from Mama Jean's, you're missing out. They're seriously the best. Ever. Also, when I say "shared", I mean we split them, but I totally ate my half in the car. Zero chill!!
This week is a crazy busy one for us. We have something every single night, even this weekend. I am already worn out...we both like being busy, but sometimes it gets a little hectic. When I got home from school yesterday, I did some weights, but then made the mistake of sitting down on the bed with the girls...which is where Jake found us when he got home! We got some serious puppy cuddle time in, though, so I'm not even upset about it. ; )
Mama Jean's for the WIN. We both had the Firebird, which had turkey, pepper jack, peppadew peppers, onion, Sriracha, & spinach. It was amazing! We both chowed down & relaxed a little before heading to a meeting for Single Track Mind. Check out the event here. Our good friend, Lori, organizes the whole thing & she does an AMAZING job. It's seriously a blast. If you're interested in going or volunteering, let me know!
Lu is always either here staring out the window or by the back door staring out the window. She sure loves her backyard. I don't know what she thinks she sees out there, but it keeps her pretty dang entertained! We got home from our Single Track Mind meeting, poured a glass of whiskey, & sat down to chat/relax. We stayed up way too late talking, which always happens, but I wouldn't change a thing! Other than an earlier bed time...I would definitely change that. ; )
Jake had a pretty tough hill repeat workout this morning, so I, being the idiot that I am, decided to join him. Hard hill repeats after a super tough half? Sure! We sat on the floor watching the girls play, drinking coffee before we started. This is my sad attempt at getting a picture of these wild beasts. I'm glad they love each other so much, but they wear us out.
My legs are absolutely dead. I think we did about three 8-10 minute steady hill repeats. Jake killed it, & I followed slowly behind him. We got back to our street at 5.8...Jake went on to get 6, which I would have liked to do, but I had to make a bathroom stop, so I didn't get a full 6 in. Sorry for the TMI! : ) HA!
I made smoothies this morning - I am going back to just Paleo, minus IF (Intermittent Fasting). I think I need more fuel right after my runs than I was getting with IF. I'm SO glad I experimented with it, though. That's the only way I learn, & I definitely learned a lot from it! This goodness was in our smoothies. <3
Mmm. They turned out super yummy!
Super ready to enjoy this goodness! Really wishing I could go back to bed for an hour or so...I think it's going to be a long day!
As I was getting ready, I laid my robe down to change. This monster always does this to anything we have been wearing. She's so goofy.
As I was getting ready to leave, I tried to find Lu to put the girls in their kennels. Aspen sticks pretty close to us when she knows we are leaving. I could not find Lu anywhere & she wouldn't come when I called her. I was about to go outside & start searching. Turns out someone was just ready for me to leave and let her rest in her kennel. She was just sitting here like this the whole time I was searching!
While I don't really miss winter running, this is still my view a lot of times. I don't mind! ; ) Jake is such a strong runner; I love getting to run with him.
Happy Tuesday, friends! I hope everyone gets to enjoy a taco or two today! We are having taco salad & I'm pretty pumped! I <3 food.
Friday started out with some meetings at school, then I grabbed a late lunch from the Mama Jean's market on Battlefield before comps. I loved this coffee sign!
I picked up lunch & took it over to my parents' so I could have complete silence (no dogs) to defend comps. I sat out on their porch & ate/relaxed a little before I got ready to defend. I love this little area!
I had the most amazing sandwich with ham, sweet potato, cheese, & jalapeno honey on it. So good. Also some Salt & Vinegar chips. Aaaaand part of an espresso brownie.
Then I got all set up to defend - I had from 1-3 to complete my defense with my dissertation committee. I Skyped into a room I had reserved on campus in Columbia & my four committee members all met there. After I finished defending, about an hour and 45 minutes in, they hung up and me to chat amongst themselves. This only lasted about 5 minutes, but it definitely felt much longer. They called me back & when I answered, they were all cheering & clapping. I PASSED! I am now officially Chelsea Dorman - ABD (All but Dissertation). Getting close!
I went upstairs to tell my Mom & we had a celebratory drink!
Then I met Jake at home to go get my packet for my half Saturday & get dinner. He was pretty excited about his Altra collection - they're our favorite shoe!
We grabbed my packet, talked with some friends, & then went to Nonna's for dinner. I think this bread & dip concoction is my all-time favorite. We usually add balsamic to it, which makes it even better!
We shared a salad & then chowed down on this goodness. Jake had the spaghetti & I made up my own meal with gnocchi, chicken, mushrooms, & garlic. They both were incredible.
Our friend Sanya was having a birthday get together at Hotel Vandivort, so we stopped by to say hi & have a drink. We, of course, took a selfie in the bathroom - you HAVE to!
Then it was home to get ready for my race & Jake's LONG run super early Saturday morning.
I almost missed my race because I turned my alarm off - WHOOPS. But I managed to get downtown in time to get a short warm-up in & find these pretty ladies. Jake also got there about the same time, so I was excited to see him before I started.
Jake found me during the race a couple of times & he even ran with me for two miles. I loved it!
I PR'd on this half & it definitely tested me. I have a hard time pushing myself when something hurts, so this race was a really good learning experience for me. I pushed myself harder than I ever have in a race & it paid off.
This was the last half I did, which was in May 0f 2016 when we were in Chicago. I finished in 2:00:48, so I knew I wanted to try for sub 2 hours this time around. I finished Saturday's half in 1:49:40!
After our runs, my family took us to Early Bird. Mmmm. Jake got the breakfast burrito & I had the Gus Gus, which is my favorite. It's an omelet with asparagus, ham, feta, and hollandaise sauce. I couldn't eat much at breakfast, but I ate the rest of my meal about 30 minutes after we got home.
We napped out in the shop for a little but, then headed to Mother's for another friend's birthday gathering. The weather was perfect & it was a wonderful, relaxing afternoon!
After Mother's, we rode our bikes & met some more friends at Galloway for dinner. We just wanted to stay outside as long as possible!
The weather = absolute perfection.
We had both wanted to get up early & run Sunday, but it was pouring & we were feeling a little lazy. We ended up watching a documentary about an incredible ultra runner - Nikki Kimball (it's on Netflix, Finding Traction - check it out), before starting on all our Easter stuff. The documentary was awesome. Very inspiring. I think our furbabies liked the extra morning cuddles - I know I did!
We headed over to my parents' for mimosas - my Dad was working on something crafty, like always! Then we headed to Highland for a SUPER YUMMY Easter brunch. We ate entirely too much.
Happy Easter from us! <3
I think Lu had a little too much fun at Grandma & Grandpa's...
We left my parents' & went to the grocery store - I cooked for the week & did laundry. I decided not to run and use Sunday as my rest day. Jake ran 10 miles to his parents' & I met him there for dinner. It worked out perfectly. We had all of this amazing-ness at their house!
We are seriously the luckiest people in the world to have neighbors like these two. Ashleigh brought over an Easter basket FULL of goodies & she wrote this card, which definitely made me tear up. So thankful for their friendship! <3
We picked up a new whiskey to try, so we had a glass of it last night. We both loved it!!
Ash gave me a charcoal mask in my Easter basket, so I decided to try it out! I didn't tell Jake what I was doing, so I scared him a little after I put this on. It was awesome! Also, the mask was incredible. Nothing like a little whiskey & a face mask on Sunday evening.
Jake thought it was funny when the mask dried & I tried not to move my face. I'm glad I entertain him. Eye-roll.
Our menu for the week. This week is pretty busy, but we have LOTS of fun stuff planned!
I got up to run this morning. I'm obsessed with my Feetures socks. They're my favorite. And my Altras. Love love love. When my alarm went off at 4:15, it was pouring, so I decided to go to the Y. By the time I was leaving, the rain had stopped, but since I had already made my mind up about running on the treadmill, I decided to hit up the Y anyway.
I got 5 miles in on the treadmill & felt really good. I was planning on 6, but my hamstring was a little tight about 4.5, so I stopped at 5. The Boston Marathon is today!!! I can't wait to watch part of it.
I got home from the Y & decided to do a little foam rolling. My legs are still pretty sore from Saturday. I didn't get much rolling time in, but I will roll again after school. Overall I am feeling pretty good!
Aspen needed some extra love this morning. <3
Some Bulletproof coffee to start the day!
I hope everyone has a fantastic Monday!
I write about whatever is going on each day. I want to use this space as a place to document my dissertation and training journeys.
